Björn Steinorth, M.Sc.
Short Bio:
Björn Steinorth has been a doctoral candidate in the Application-Specific Computing group under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Robert Strzodka since July 2026. His research focuses on making distributed-memory clusters programmable like one large NUMA machine: a single shared address space in which the programmer still controls where data lives. He develops VGAS (Virtual Global Address Space), a distributed shared-memory library built on Linux page-fault handling and MPI one-sided communication. His work covers NUMA-aware data placement, the cost of moving data and metadata over RDMA, and how MPI and network libraries scale when every page becomes a remotely accessible object. Björn holds a B.Sc. in Computer Science and an M.Sc. in Data and Computer Science, both from Heidelberg University.
I’m always looking for scientific applications to run on VGAS. Feel free to reach out via email if you’re interested in collaborating.
Research Interests:
- Distributed shared memory runtimes
- MPI, especially one-sided communication
- High-performance interconnects and RDMA
- NUMA-aware programming and data placement
- Performance portability across MPI implementations and containers
